KEIO 150 Design the Future

The commemorative logo expresses the basic theme of Keio University’s 150th Anniversary Commemorative Project, “Design the Future,” and its fundamental concept, “a university established with focus on two principles: ‘independence’ and ‘collaboration.’”

The logo was created by envisioning a future in which a variety of people possessing the ability to live independently and the ability to live cooperatively are active.

The ellipse, which is open to represent a view of the future, symbolizes tolerance through flexible acceptance of diversity. It also projects a view of the cosmos as a place of continuing dynamic activity.

Keio University hopes that many people will see this logo, which can be drawn easily by anyone, as a symbol of their own futures and as encompassing their own concept of the two abilities.

Development of the commemorative logo began with extensive discussion of the project’s concept within the preparatory committee for the 150th Anniversary Commemorative Project. Then, based on the defined concept, various experts submitted logo design proposals. A large number of people—including members of the preparatory committee, university employees, students, and faculty members—offered their opinions on the proposals. Then the final design was developed based on the proposal that was picked by the preparatory committee.

The logo was completed through a process that began with careful examination of its concept and then moved to repeated examination of the elements that should comprise it. It should be noted that the logo’s design benefited immensely from cooperation extended by Mr. Hiroshi Senju, an artist.

Branding for the 150th anniversary

In April 2006, Keio University started putting up banners and wall decorations to inform students and local citizens of the 150th anniversary. Among other features, the decorations include the 150th anniversary logo mark, the “Pen Mark” that is the symbol of Keio University, and photographs of student life.
