International dimension

Building a research and education framework to lead the international community of the 21st century.

Opening a global campus and further promoting collaboration with overseas universities and institutions

Background and situation

  • Human resources capable of engaging in discussions and negotiations on equal footing with people from various countries and regions must be developed.
  • Approximately 4,500 faculty members from overseas play a major role in promoting internationalization. The Mitakai (Keio alumni association) has more than 50 overseas branches.

Directions and details

  • Keio University opened new bases at Yonsei University (South Korea) in March 2006 and in London (United Kingdom) in July 2006 to join its traditional bases in Europe and North America. It also opened two new bases in 2007 in Beijing (April) and Shanghai (October).

Furthermore, Keio University is hosting distance learning and symposia by opening “Global Studios” that make full use of the latest information technology in North America (San Francisco and New York City), Europe (Cambridge, UK) and Asia (Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo).

The university also operates the School on Internet Asia (SOI-Asia) project, an undertaking based on distance learning and other approaches, with 26 universities and research institutes in 12 Asian countries, including Japan.

  • Keio University is promoting collaboration with overseas universities as well. As of March 2008, it has concluded exchange agreements with 222 universities and institutes. These agreements are leading to dramatic increases in the number of Keio students that study overseas and the number of overseas students learning at Keio.
  • Active hosting of international events to mark the university’s 150 years.
Keio University hosts symposia, workshops, and other gatherings not only in Japan but also at the international level. These gatherings are held at sites around the world, including the overseas bases of Keio University and universities with which it collaborates.
  • Completion of the Shimoda Student Village in April 2006.

A four-story building complete with 150 student rooms and 98 Athletic League rooms that serves to support the daily living of overseas students and enhance Athletic League facilities.

The second, third, and fourth floors are accommodations for overseas students and Athletic League members, making it a “place for international exchange” for both. The first floor contains training rooms, rooms for club activities, and other facilities.
