Adoption of Keio University’s 150th anniversary for a special postage stamp

Today, the Japan Post Service announced its postage stamp issuance plan for FY2008. The plan includes the selection of Keio University’s 150th anniversary as the subject of a special stamp. This marks the second time that Keio University has been so honored, following the university’s “100th anniversary commemorative stamp” that was issued on November 8, 1958*1.

In 2008, Keio University will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding as a modern comprehensive institution of higher education. We believe the issuance of this stamp will prove highly significant as a means of looking back over Japan’s history of modernization since the Meiji Restoration and of sharing with society at large our desire to pioneer new social modes.

Issuance of the stamp is scheduled for Friday, November 7, 2008, which will be the day prior to the official 150th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony.

*1The commemorative stamp issued at the time of the university’s 100th anniversary featured a design combining images of Yukichi Fukuzawa and the Old University Library as well as the university’s symbolic “Pen Mark.” Fifteen million stamps were issued at a value of 10 yen each.
